Archaeosite and Museum of Aubechies-Beloeil, a life-sized journey through 5,000 years of history

What if you could travel back in time, step by step, from 5,000 years before our era to the Gallo-Roman period? At the Archaeosite and Museum of Aubechies-Beloeil, the past is not only told — it is experienced, explored and felt. Considered the largest archaeological reconstruction site in Belgium, this unique place invites visitors to discover how our ancestors lived through faithfully reconstructed habitats built at full scale (1:1), in the heart of Wallonia.

From prehistoric houses to Gallo-Roman villages

The visit begins with a striking immersion. Here, there are no static display cases: the first houses of our regions, dating from the Neolithic period, stand before you, followed by constructions from the Metal Ages and Gallo-Roman dwellings. Each building has been reconstructed based on archaeological research, with scientific accuracy that makes the site both fascinating and accessible.

Visitors easily imagine daily life: the crackling of a fire, repeated gestures, the organisation of the village. The shapes, materials and even the smells bring a tangible dimension to a history that often feels abstract. Suddenly the past becomes concrete and almost familiar, helping visitors understand how ancient societies lived in harmony with their environment.

A living site animated by ancient crafts

During the season, especially on Sundays, the archaeosite becomes even more vibrant thanks to the presence of volunteer craftsmen. Pottery, blacksmithing and other everyday techniques are demonstrated on site, bringing additional depth to the visit. The exchanges are simple and human, allowing visitors to ask questions and witness forgotten skills that once shaped daily life.

The results of archaeological research are presented in a clear and engaging way, feeding curiosity without overwhelming the visitor. Learning happens naturally through observation, comparison and sometimes experimentation. For groups, many activities available by reservation extend this educational approach in a participatory and playful spirit.

The museum: beliefs, rituals and invisible worlds

After the outdoor exploration, the museum space completes the discovery. It focuses on ancient beliefs and religious practices, the invisible yet essential dimensions of past societies. Objects, explanations and contextual displays reveal how people in ancient times understood the world, the sacred, death and the forces of nature.

This more reflective section encourages visitors to think more deeply while remaining accessible. It gives meaning to the structures observed outside and connects the physical remains of the past with the thoughts, rituals and beliefs that shaped them.

An immersive experience for curious visitors of all ages

Located near Beloeil, the Archaeosite and Museum of Aubechies-Beloeil is an ideal stop during a cultural trip in the Hainaut region, whether with family, a school group or simply out of curiosity about our origins. The site can be explored at one’s own pace, inviting wonder, questions and a deeper understanding of the past.
