An ideal visit for families, curious visitors and history enthusiasts who enjoy learning through play, being surprised and diving into the daily life of the Gallo-Romans during a cultural adventure.
What if Antiquity suddenly became concrete, close and almost familiar? At the Gallo-Roman Space, the past is not observed from a distance — it is experienced, handled and felt. Located in the heart of Ath, this human-scale museum invites visitors of all ages to take a true journey into the daily life of the Gallo-Romans, combining major archaeological discoveries, modern technologies and sensory experiences.
From the very entrance, visitors are met with surprise. The Gallo-Roman Space houses in its collections two exceptional Gallo-Roman boats, both rare and impressive. The flat-bottomed barge, recognized as a treasure of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, and the dugout canoe are both preserved here, remarkable for their size and remarkable age.
These millennia-old giants, discovered in the region, reveal another dimension of the Roman world: trade, exchange and river navigation. Seeing them up close creates an immediate connection with the people who built and used them nearly two thousand years ago.
At the Gallo-Roman Space, visitors are never passive observers. The exhibition route is designed to make everyone an active participant in their discovery, thanks to a well-balanced mix of archaeological artefacts and digital displays. Bone, glass, metal and other materials reveal the richness of the local past and the diversity of everyday Roman life.
The museum stands out for its playful and dynamic approach, particularly appreciated by families. Children explore, interact and ask questions, while adults deepen their understanding of the historical and scientific context. Learning happens naturally through observation and experimentation.
The experience goes beyond visual discovery. The colour red, dominant throughout the museum and symbol of Roman imperial power, creates a strong identity within the exhibition spaces. The workshops organised by the museum further enrich the immersion: Roman cooking, perfumes and bathing rituals allow visitors to discover Antiquity through smells, gestures and sensations.
These sensory moments truly transport visitors into the Gallo-Roman era, awakening curiosity and often inspiring genuine wonder. The past becomes a living, tangible experience.
Thanks to its human-scale design, the Gallo-Roman Space can be explored easily without fatigue or information overload. The variety of objects, sometimes surprising pieces and clear scenography make the visit smooth and enjoyable, even for younger visitors.
Located in Wallonia, the museum fits perfectly into a cultural outing in Ath, combining urban heritage and ancient history. It is a wonderful way to discover local archaeology while sharing an enriching and enjoyable experience together.
