A perfect visit if you enjoy instructive, family-friendly museums where the living world is at the heart of the route, and where each step invites wonder, with family or solo, during a gentle and inspiring discovery in Tournai.
Founded in 1828, during the Dutch period, the Natural History Museum and Vivarium is simply the oldest museum of its kind in Belgium. From the moment you enter, you sense that the place has a special character: here, science is told with curiosity, patience and passion, in an approach that is both educational, vibrant and deeply accessible to visitors of all ages.
One of the museum’s greatest charms lies in its cabinet of curiosities, which immerses visitors in the fascinating atmosphere of 19th-century natural history collections. Display cases are filled with taxidermied specimens, sometimes rare, sometimes extinct, always impressive.
Visitors observe, marvel and learn. Each animal tells the story of a time when the world was explored and understood through collecting, combining scientific curiosity with a certain poetry.
This part of the visit evokes another way of practising science, more contemplative, often awakening a feeling of quiet wonder, like strolling through an old book that has come to life.
The museum is not fixed in the past: it is also resolutely alive. The vivarium hosts fish, tarantulas, amphibians and reptiles living in recreated habitats designed to respect their natural needs.
Visitors particularly appreciate this close encounter with living creatures, which makes the discovery more concrete and memorable, especially for children.
The museum also plays an important role in the protection of endangered species, notably with Jamaican boas. It is a reminder that science is not only about observation, but also about responsibility and commitment to biodiversity.
Outside, the scientific garden extends the visit in a peaceful setting. Outdoor enclosures allow visitors to observe certain species in a different way, following the rhythm of the seasons.
From April to the end of October, the exotic butterfly greenhouse becomes a highlight of the visit: colours, delicate movements and gentle warmth create an enchanting moment, often described as magical by visitors.
Visitors stroll, slow down and observe the details simply reconnecting with the living world.
Located in Tournai, in Wallonia, the Natural History Museum and Vivarium is an ideal destination for a family outing, a school visit or a curious escape. It combines scientific heritage, educational approach and the pleasure of discovery, without ever feeling intimidating.
Here, science is experienced with eyes wide open, between past and present, curiosity and ecological awareness.
