An ideal visit for car enthusiasts, heritage lovers, nostalgics and curious visitors or simply for those who love places where you feel a true passion, generously passed on through memories and exceptional machines.
Mahymobiles is far more than a museum. It is a deep and emotional immersion into the global history of the automobile, told through 300 mechanical treasures gathered with patience, dedication and love. From the very first steps, one thing becomes clear: here, every vehicle has a soul, an anecdote and a story. Everything reflects the passion passed down from generation to generation by the Mahy family.
The Mahy collection, internationally recognised for its extraordinary diversity, represents a remarkable piece of Belgian heritage. Luxury cars, popular models, utility vehicles, racing cars, prototypes, motorcycles, buses, trucks, microcars and legendary classics: everything that has travelled, dreamed and moved along our roads has its place here.
Visitors often describe a feeling of joyful amazement, a pleasant surprise. Many speak of a true time capsule, an unexpected journey where one moves from the elegance of a vintage coupé to the raw energy of a 1920s racing car, recognisable by its national colours: yellow for Belgium, red for Italy and green for England.
The Mahymobiles experience also awakens the senses. The smells bring back forgotten memories: aged leather, noble wood, oil and rubber familiar scents that recall your father’s car or your grandfather’s garage, when automobiles were deeply woven into family life.
The vivid colours, sometimes pastel, sometimes two-toned, immediately capture the eye. In one of the halls, an almost urban-exploration atmosphere adds a touch of mystery, reinforcing the sensation of discovering a place outside time. Visitors observe quietly, whisper, and marvel.
At Mahymobiles, stories travel just as much as the vehicles themselves. One tale tells how, during a journey to bring newly purchased cars back home, the transport truck broke down and a vintage car ended up towing the truck and trailer all the way to Ghent.
Another delightful anecdote: several vehicles from the collection have appeared in famous films such as The Tiger Brigades, The Music Teacher and The Longest Day. Some actors were unfamiliar with these historic machines, so Ghislain Mahy would take the wheel, or Ivan Mahy would crouch near the pedals, guiding the actor’s movements from below. Scenes worthy of a film within the film.
Above all, Mahymobiles conveys a powerful spirit of transmission. The Mahy family has devoted its life to preserving these vehicles and sharing their stories: the story of a technological revolution that unfolded in barely 130 years.
The automobile transformed the world, offering the freedom to travel and reshaping landscapes and lifestyles. Cars were cherished, given nicknames, repaired and kept for years. Each model had its personality, its character and its place in everyday life.
Mahymobiles is often described as a magical place, surprising and deeply human, where visitors leave with the desire to share the discovery and return again — this time with family or friends.
