Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode, a sensory journey into the heart of textile ingenuity

The Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode invites visitors to follow the thread of time, back to when wool shaped a city, its trades and an entire society. Housed in a remarkable former textile factory with an impressive setting and a beautiful inner courtyard, the site immediately immerses visitors in the atmosphere of 19th-century Verviers. Here, the Industrial Revolution is not only explained on panels: it is observed, heard, felt and truly understood.

Very quickly, visitors experience the rare feeling of travelling through time, close to the men and women who once drove the industrial heart of the region.

Historic machines that tell the story of the Industrial Revolution

The section dedicated to wool is undoubtedly one of the most striking parts of the visit. Here, visitors discover the first industrial machines on the European continent, built as early as 1800 by William Cockerill. Imposing, mechanical and sometimes intimidating, they impress through their proximity: you see them up close and grasp both their complexity and their power.

The atmosphere is striking. Dark tones – wood, metal, browns and greys – evoke the world of factories of the past. Certain smells are surprising, particularly that of the grease derived from sheep fleece, strong and raw before being refined and used in cosmetics. Even the sounds contribute to the immersion: in the workers’ café, visitors hear birdsong, a hobby once popular among workers who enjoyed participating in singing competitions.

A story told with passion and humanity

The visit takes on its full dimension thanks to the guides, who tell a lively story and adapt their explanations to the interests of each group. Their approach makes the experience particularly engaging, far beyond a simple audioguide. Visitors gain a better understanding of the working conditions, the human ingenuity at work, and the social and economic realities of the time.

Anecdotes punctuate the discovery and leave a lasting impression: for example, 30 litres of water were needed to wash 1 kg of wool, a figure that immediately echoes today’s environmental challenges. These details add depth to the story and strengthen the connection between past and present.

Fashion, between heritage and today’s questions

The Centre also opens perspectives on fashion, with a section dedicated to the evolution of textiles. Visitors discover the differences between natural, synthetic and artificial textiles, as well as textiles of the future: apple or fish leather, anti-allergenic fabrics and surprising technological innovations.

This part of the visit encourages reflection on the role of the responsible consumer, the challenges of fast fashion and the impact of our choices. The future Fashion exhibition, announced for 2026, promises an even more interactive approach, with numerous games and hands-on activities designed to learn while having fun.

An experience that awakens curiosity and reflection

The Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode is often praised for the quality of its welcome and the richness of its content. Visitors leave more curious and more aware, with the feeling of having gained a deeper understanding of an essential part of our industrial history, while looking at today’s fashion and textiles with fresh eyes.
