An ideal visit for curious visitors, families and all those who enjoy learning through play, and who want to experience an original discovery around an industrial and natural heritage that is often little known.
The Centre d’Interprétation de la Pierre offers a discovery that is both surprising and revealing. From the moment you arrive, it becomes clear that the visit goes far beyond simply looking at stones. Here, you learn to look differently at the world around you. The exhibition, both interactive and playful, provides an accessible immersion where stone becomes a thread connecting our environment, our history and our everyday lives.
Many visitors leave with the same feeling: they have discovered a place that truly deserves to be known, and above all they now see a new perspective on a material that is everywhere around us, yet often invisible to our eyes.
The Stone Interpretation Centre is housed in a remarkable building, where certain details immediately capture attention, such as an Art Nouveau electrical panel — a testament to craftsmanship and aesthetics rarely highlighted. This distinctive setting enhances the pleasure of the visit and creates an atmosphere that encourages curiosity and discovery.
The museum space is designed as a place of experience. Visitors do more than read or observe: they handle, examine and compare. Interactive installations invite both children and adults to explore at their own pace, making the discovery lively and accessible for the whole family.
Throughout the visit, stone reveals its many dimensions. Geology, fossils and quarries appear alongside industrial, workers’ and social history, telling the story of how this material has shaped landscapes, professions and communities. The exhibition highlights the strong connection between stone and human activity, showing its central role in the development of territories.
This broader perspective helps visitors understand something they walk on every day without noticing. Stone is no longer just part of the scenery — it becomes memory, resource and heritage.
The centre also looks toward contemporary creation. Every year at the beginning of September, an international sculptors’ residency takes place, offering an artistic and sensitive interpretation of the material. These residencies strengthen the dialogue between heritage, creation and transmission, reminding us that stone continues to inspire today.
The emotion sought here is one of wonder, born from rediscovering the everyday environment. Visitors often leave surprised and curious, with the desire to look differently at pavements, walls and landscapes that surround them.
