A perfect place if you love true stories, popular traditions and museums where you immediately feel at ease, for a family visit or a meaningful cultural getaway in Tournai.
Stepping through the doors of the Museum of Folklore and Imaginary Worlds means entering a living memory, that of Tournai and its inhabitants, from 1800 to the present day. Spread across 23 exhibition rooms, MuFIm does more than display objects: it tells the stories of lives, everyday gestures, trades, festivities and traditions that have shaped the City of the Five Belfries. A warm and authentic visit where visitors sometimes recognise an object from their childhood or one that belonged to their grandparents.
Each room is a window open onto the past. The objects on display – utensils, tools, clothing, games and everyday items – become true witnesses of local history. The exhibition connects different eras and shows how the people of Tournai lived, worked, entertained themselves and passed on their knowledge.
The staged mannequins, inspired by archival photographs and scenes from everyday life in the past, create the impression that time has paused for a moment. Visitors observe an artisan at work, a family gathered together, a modest or more elegant interior: everything reflects authenticity and the desire to preserve a rich and distinctive local culture.
MuFIm gives an important place to traditional trades, those professions that once structured the rhythm of city life and some of which have now disappeared. Visitors discover the tools, skills and everyday ingenuity through an approach that is accessible and often playful.
The traditional tavern games add a joyful and convivial dimension to the visit. Among them is the jeu de fer, one of the best-known local games, recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. A reminder of the spirit of celebration and sharing that animated – and still animates – life in Tournai.
A moment often mentioned as a highlight of the visit is the relief map of Tournai, dating from the time of the Sun King, Louis XIV. This remarkable piece allows visitors to understand the organisation of the city, its fortifications and its streets during a strategic period of its history.
Thanks to an intelligent lighting system, the map comes alive before visitors’ eyes. Streets, squares and key locations illuminate one after another, guiding the gaze and making the interpretation clear and engaging, even for younger visitors. A fine example of interpretation that combines heritage with modern presentation.
The Museum of Folklore and Imaginary Worlds stands out for its human and interactive approach. The visit unfolds at your own pace, with displays designed to awaken the curiosity of both children and adults. Visitors learn by observing, comparing and remembering sometimes with a smile.
Located in Tournai, in Wallonia, MuFIm fits perfectly into a stroll through the historic city centre. It complements the discovery of the city by giving life to its history and its inhabitants, far from grand official narratives and close to everyday experiences.
