MUMONS – Museum of the University of Mons, keys to understanding the world in the heart of Mons

At MUMONS, curiosity reigns. Located in the former Visitandine monastery, in the heart of Mons, this university museum offers a distinctive cultural experience at the crossroads of science, history and mediation. Here, visitors do more than simply see an exhibition: they come to understand, to be surprised and to question the world around them, in an atmosphere that is accessible, human and refreshingly open.

A major immersive exhibition for all audiences

The exhibition Electric! forms the beating heart of the programme. It explores how electricity has transformed our daily lives, through an unexpected and joyful lens: that of the funfair. The exhibition combines rare scientific objects, playful installations and immersive experiences, creating a visit that is both informative and entertaining.

Designed by historians and physicists, the exhibition covers a wide range of perspectives: visitors learn, manipulate, sometimes smile, and leave with new insights into a phenomenon that is present everywhere in our lives. The visit, recommended for around 1 hour and 30 minutes, appeals equally to families and science enthusiasts, without ever feeling reserved for specialists.

The crypt and the history of the site, between science and heritage

Beneath the visitors’ footsteps lies another treasure: the crypt, which hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Visitandine monastery. The atmosphere is intimate, almost hushed, enhanced by an original video mapping installation with a touch of humour. It offers a sensitive and contemporary way of telling the story of the site without excessive solemnity.

For those who wish to explore further, the guided tour Behind the Scenes of the Monastery allows visitors, on selected Sundays, to discover areas usually closed to the public. It reveals hidden spaces, traces of everyday life in the past and architectural secrets of the building, presented with insight and passion.

Looking up to the sky at the planetarium

Another remarkable feature of MUMONS is its planetarium, accessible during regular sessions. Both children and adults can discover the sky and the stars in an atmosphere that inspires wonder while explaining astronomical phenomena. It offers a poetic and scientific interlude, ideal for nurturing curiosity from an early age.

A lively museum on a human scale

What stands out at MUMONS is the richness of its offer, concentrated within a museum of human scale. Exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, workshops and evening events form a dynamic programme that evolves throughout the year, driven by a team committed to dialogue and accessibility. Visitors feel welcomed and encouraged to ask questions and exchange ideas.

Rooted in academic research while remaining open to the city, MUMONS embraces its role as a bridge between knowledge and the public: offering keys to understanding the world without jargon or distance, with curiosity and enjoyment.
