Malmundarium, a thousand years of living history in the heart of Malmedy

The Malmundarium is not a museum like the others. Located in the former Malmedy monastery, it is at once a place of memory, a vibrant cultural space, and the true historical and tourist heart of the city. As soon as you step inside, it becomes clear that these walls have many stories to tell. Here, history does not sleep: it is transmitted, explored and shared through varied exhibitions that appeal as much to emotion as to curiosity.

The site’s origins go far back in time. Everything begins in 648, when the Benedictine monk Remaclus settled here with a few companions in what was then a still wild region. The monastery of Malmedy, together with that of Stavelot, would form a princely abbey that lasted for more than 1,100 years of history, until the French Revolution.

A monastery with a turbulent destiny

Over the centuries, the monastery underwent many transformations. After the end of the principality, the buildings changed roles according to successive regimes: French, Prussian and then German. Each period left its mark, modifying the structures and adapting them to new uses. The buildings visible today date mainly from the early 18th century, but archaeological excavations have revealed traces from all the major phases of monastic life, from the 7th to the 18th century.

This layering of eras gives the Malmundarium a unique atmosphere. Visitors are not confronted with a static history, but with a narrative composed of successive layers that can be read both in the stone walls and in the objects on display.

A cultural centre with many facets

Since its acquisition by the City of Malmedy in 1985, with the support of the Walloon Region, the monastery has regained a central mission: to serve as a major cultural and tourist hub open to everyone. Renamed the Malmundarium, the complex now extends over nearly 3,000 square metres, from the ground floor to the attics.

The visit unfolds through several complementary spaces. The Historium explains the history of the site and the region, while the Cathedral Treasury reveals a precious religious heritage carefully preserved and displayed. These sections provide visitors with the keys to understanding Malmedy’s spiritual and political importance throughout the centuries.

Folklore, craftsmanship and local identity

The Malmundarium also highlights the folklore and traditions of the region. The Carnival workshop immerses visitors in the festive and symbolic universe of Malmedy’s famous carnival, explaining its origins, meanings and cultural significance.

The leather and paper workshops recall the region’s industrial past. Here, visitors discover the techniques and craftsmanship that once shaped the local economy and everyday life of entire generations. These spaces tell stories of people, work and ingenuity in a clear and engaging way.

A place that lives throughout the year

The Malmundarium is not limited to its permanent collections. Throughout the year, temporary exhibitions enrich the visit and constantly renew perspectives on the site and its heritage. These events keep the place vibrant and give visitors many reasons to return.

Many visitors leave surprised by the richness and diversity of what they have discovered, with the feeling of having gained a deeper understanding of the soul of Malmedy.
