An ideal visit for those interested in military history, battle and siege narratives, and who want to better understand how eight centuries of conflict shaped a territory and its memory.
At the Military History Museum of Tournai, time seems to unfold like a long ribbon stretching between the Middle Ages and the twentieth century. From 1100 to 1945, the exhibition leads visitors on a striking journey through time, into the heart of the wars, sieges and upheavals that shaped Tournai and the Tournaisis. It is a deep, sometimes impressive yet always enlightening immersion into the military memory of a strategic territory.
Tournai, a highly coveted city, witnessed the passage of Europe’s great powers. The museum recounts these eight centuries of tensions and confrontations through the stories of wars, revolutions, battles and sieges that marked the city.
Names resonate like chapters of a living history book: Edward III, Henry VIII, Charles V, Louis XIV, the Duke of Marlborough, Louis XV Each of them, at one moment or another, influenced the military destiny of the city.
The exhibition also highlights the evolution of Tournai’s fortifications, showing how the city adapted, century after century, to new forms of warfare and advances in military strategy.
The collections impress with their diversity and historical scope. Weapons, uniforms, equipment and documents illustrate major military periods: the revolutionary and imperial eras, the Dutch period and the Belgian regiments stationed in Tournai until 1914.
Among the most striking pieces, two treasures recognised by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles attract particular attention: a medieval cannon and a V2 rocket, extreme symbols of the evolution of weaponry—from close combat to long-range weapons of destruction. The contrast between these objects reveals the scale of technological progress and invites reflection on its consequences.
The museum gives significant attention to the events of the twentieth century, anchoring them in local experience. The battle of 24 August 1914, the Allied offensive of 1918, the Battle of the Scheldt in May 1940, the bombings of 1940 and 1944, and finally the liberation of 1944 are presented through objects, testimonies and documents, making these periods more concrete and more human.
This is not an abstract narrative of war, but a story of what it meant for a city, its inhabitants, its soldiers, its streets and its buildings.
A visit to the Military History Museum of Tournai encourages both historical understanding and reflection. It places conflicts in perspective, highlighting the evolution of strategies and technologies and the role of a European city at the centre of military history.
Located in Tournai, in Wallonia, the museum naturally forms part of a broader discovery of the city’s heritage, adding a more solemn but essential perspective on its past.
