Information
Citadel of Namur, the great green lung steeped in history above the Meuse
It is impossible to imagine Namur without the Citadel of Namur. A true symbol of the city, this fortress has watched over the people of Namur for centuries, proudly perched at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse. Listed as Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia and counted among the largest citadels in Europe, it offers a rare balance between historic power and green serenity.
From the moment you arrive, the scale of the site is impressive. This is not just a monument but a vast urban park, freely accessible, where visitors come both to stroll and to understand history.
An open site for everyone, between nature and spectacular panoramas
The Citadel is above all a place to breathe. Its woods, paths and green spaces form a true green lung of Namur, appreciated by walkers and families alike. Around every corner, the view is rewarded with spectacular viewpoints over the city and the Meuse valley. The seasons transform the atmosphere, yet the sense of wonder remains constant.
Visitors stroll freely, pause, and take their time. The contrast between the old stones, witnesses to major historical events, and the softness of the surrounding natural setting creates a unique atmosphere, ideal for discovery and relaxation.
Diving into history through immersive visits
With the Citadel Pass, the visit takes on another dimension. The Terra Nova Visitor Centre provides historical context, while the guided tours, renowned for the passion and knowledge of their guides, bring centuries of history to life. The new guided tour The Citadel in the Middle Ages clearly highlights the strategic role of the site during this foundational period.
A highlight for many visitors is the discovery of the underground passages with sound and light. Entering them truly feels like travelling through a corridor of time. The constant temperature of 13 degrees, both summer and winter, adds a surprising sensory dimension to the experience. These galleries, nicknamed by Napoleon the Termite Hill of Europe , testify to the military ingenuity developed over the centuries.
A living and accessible citadel
The Citadel of Namur can also be explored in a more relaxed way. The tourist train allows visitors to discover the site effortlessly while enjoying explanations and panoramic views. The free parking makes access easy, reinforcing the feeling of a welcoming and open place.
Combining military history, heritage, events and scenic walks, the Citadel successfully balances its role as a major historical site with that of a lively public space enjoyed year-round by a wide range of visitors.
An experience to enjoy at your own pace
The Citadel of Namur imposes nothing. It can be discovered according to your wishes: a simple walk, a deeper historical immersion, a family outing or a quiet moment overlooking the landscape.
