La Boverie, art in majesty in a luminous setting in the heart of Liège

La Boverie is much more than a museum: it is a sensitive, elegant and deeply inspiring experience. Located in the heart of a listed park on the banks of the Meuse, it houses the collections of the Fine Arts of the City of Liège, from the 16th to the 21st century, while also hosting temporary exhibitions of international renown. The building itself already tells a story: the former Palais des Beaux-Arts of the 1905 Universal Exhibition, it has been beautifully renovated and extended with a contemporary glass extension inaugurated in 2016, creating a subtle dialogue between heritage and modernity.

From the moment you enter, a distinctive atmosphere emerges: calm, light, space everything invites you to open your eyes and take your time.

A permanent journey from the Renaissance to modern art

On the lower level, La Boverie reveals the finest pieces from the City of Liège’s permanent collections. The route moves smoothly through the centuries, from the Renaissance to the modern era, highlighting the modernity of art across all periods. Visitors encounter major works by Lambert Lombard, Gérard de Lairesse, Ingres, Gauguin, Chagall, Picasso, Evenepoel, Delvaux, Magritte, among many others.

The exhibition design, supervised by the Louvre Museum, presents the artworks with clarity and elegance. Several pieces are listed as treasures of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, underlining the exceptional richness of the collections. The visit is designed to be accessible to the widest audience, thanks to an interactive educational guide available in four languages, offering insight without ever overwhelming the experience.

Major exhibitions for full immersion

Upstairs, La Boverie shifts pace. Across nearly 3,000 m², the temporary exhibitions offer powerful, ambitious and often spectacular immersions. Organised by the City of Liège and sometimes in collaboration with the Louvre, they explore both art and major themes of civilisation.

The programme stands out for its ability to bring together all forms of artistic expression, creating immersive journeys where visitors are invited to feel as much as to understand. Each exhibition transforms the museum, renewing the experience and encouraging visitors to return again and again.

A museum to experience between park, light and contemplation

The location of La Boverie contributes greatly to the pleasure of the visit. The surrounding listed park offers a welcome breath of fresh air before or after exploring the galleries, extending the experience with a peaceful walk in nature. Natural light, ever-present thanks to the architecture, accompanies the gaze and reinforces this feeling of openness and serenity.

La Boverie is best visited without haste. Visitors linger, return, and share moments of emotion, whether they are art lovers, curious travellers, or simply seeking an inspiring pause in Liège.
