Malagne – Rochefort Archaeopark, experience Antiquity in real life

At Malagne – Rochefort Archaeopark, archaeology is not observed behind glass: it is experienced, felt and shared. Here, you follow in the footsteps of the Gallo-Romans, at the heart of an exceptional natural estate where the remains of a vast Roman villa and its reconstructed annexes bring the daily life of the 1st century back to life. From the moment you arrive, time seems to slow down, as if the site gently invites you to change your rhythm and perspective.

Living and experimental archaeology

Malagne stands out for its approach to living archaeology, where ancient gestures come back to life before your eyes. Visitors discover the impressive remains of the main residence, then move freely between reconstructed buildings, gardens and experimental areas. Here, history is understood through experience: the making of cervoise, baking bread in a clay oven, working at the forge, or harvesting using the vallus, the remarkable ancient agricultural machine. Each demonstration and workshop becomes a bridge between past and present.

A natural setting that soothes and inspires

The site lies within a remarkable natural environment, where archaeology interacts with the landscape. Strolling through the Roman gardens and vegetable plots, you breathe in the scents of aromatic plants, observe the animals of the estate and let yourself be carried by the surrounding calm. The song of swallows in the reconstructed Epona barn, the crackling of the fire, the breath of the forge and the scent of burning wood create an immersive, almost meditative atmosphere. The colours of the site change with the seasons, constantly transforming the visitor experience.

Knowledge sharing designed for all audiences

Malagne places great importance on cultural transmission. The visitor route is clear and accessible, enriched with a free audio guide, informative panels and numerous activities that make Antiquity understandable and engaging, including for children. Families particularly appreciate this educational approach, which stimulates curiosity without ever feeling austere. Many visitors leave with the feeling of having truly travelled through time, moved by the simplicity and intelligence of the experience.

Memorable moments and delightful anecdotes

Certain moments remain long in the memory. The experimental cervoise, produced for more than twenty years using historical techniques, always surprises during tastings: its flavour divides opinions, but its authenticity impresses. Another unmissable stop is the Roman latrines, which often provoke amused smiles when visitors learn that they were once genuine places of discussion and social life. These details, both serious and light-hearted, make the visit deeply human.

A site that comes alive during events

While Malagne can be enjoyed throughout the year, the site takes on a different dimension during events and activities. At these moments, the villa truly seems inhabited: gestures multiply, sounds intensify and exchanges become lively. The past is no longer simply told, it comes to life. Visitors then fully understand the site’s mission: to create living connections between the gestures of yesterday and those of today.

Malagne – Rochefort Archaeopark is an ideal destination for those who enjoy authentic places, where learning happens through observing, listening and experimenting.
