Archéoforum of Liège, an underground adventure to trace the origins of the city

Beneath the lively atmosphere of Place Saint-Lambert, in the very heart of Liège, lies a place few would imagine yet one that leaves no visitor indifferent. The Archéoforum of Liège houses a vast underground archaeological site, an exceptional witness to the origins of the city. From the very first minutes, the contrast is striking: the urban bustle fades away as visitors enter a world of mineral silence, soft lighting and the scent of ancient stone. It is a true journey beyond time, where history is experienced rather than simply told.

Many visitors leave with the same feeling, a mix of amazement and pride: We never imagined what was beneath our feet.

Exploring 9,000 years of history beneath the city

The Archéoforum extends across nearly 3,725 m² of archaeological remains, retracing 9,000 years of history, from Prehistory to the 18th century. Step by step, visitors move through the layers of time, discovering the evolution of the site where Liège was born.

Among the highlights of the visit, some moments leave a lasting impression. The site of the martyrdom of Saint Lambert, a founding event, is presented with clarity and respect. This assassination profoundly changed the destiny of the place, leading to the construction of prestigious sanctuaries and the birth of a true city. Further on, the pillars and walls of the Gothic cathedral, destroyed during the Liège Revolution, recall the past grandeur of the city and evoke a particularly solemn emotion.

When archaeology becomes lively and engaging

What makes the Archéoforum unique is its ability to make archaeology accessible and captivating. Thanks to interactive tablets and immersive digital experiences, history becomes concrete and understandable for everyone. Visitors discover the life of the Gallo-Romans, the secrets of the vanished cathedral, and the earliest human traces found on the site.

One of the most impressive remains is that of a 2nd-century Gallo-Roman agricultural site, including the first stone building constructed in Liège and a remarkably preserved Roman hypocaust heating system. These discoveries reinforce the feeling of underground exploration, almost like an adventure, that accompanies the entire visit.

An immersive experience for all ages

The visit can be enjoyed as a guided group tour, individually or with family, and numerous activities are organised throughout the year. The site is designed to welcome both children and adults, each finding their own level of understanding and fascination. The authenticity of the remains, the richness of the history and the interactive approach create a rare balance between knowledge and the pleasure of discovery.

Visitors often leave impressed, with the feeling of having touched something profound: the roots of Liège, but also a heritage to be proud of here in Wallonia.
