An ideal visit for those who like understanding the past through objects, taking the time to observe and connecting history to places, to discover during a stop in Arlon, to explore Antiquity at human scale.
The Arlon Archaeological Museum invites visitors to travel back in time, between the 1st and 3rd centuries, to discover the daily life of our Gallo-Roman ancestors. Renowned for the quality and richness of its sculpted stone blocks, the museum offers a fascinating immersion into a period when Arlon held a strategic position at the heart of the Roman world. The visit unfolds as a calm and informative journey, where every stone and every object tells a human story.
From the very first rooms, the atmosphere is one of attentive discovery. Visitors take the time to observe, compare and understand. Here, archaeology is made accessible while never losing its depth.
The museum houses the largest Gallo-Roman lapidary collection in Belgium. The sculpted blocks, remarkable for their finesse and variety, testify to the craftsmanship of ancient artisans and to the symbolic richness of the period. Reliefs, architectural fragments and decorative elements: stone becomes a language, memory engraved in matter.
These monumental works offer a direct reading of the past. They allow visitors to imagine the buildings, places of worship and public spaces that structured ancient life. The visit thus provides a concrete perspective on Gallo-Roman urban planning and beliefs.
As visitors move from display case to display case, the experience becomes more intimate. Ceramics, pottery, glassware, jewellery, personal adornments and tools enrich the discovery and shed light on daily life between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. These objects, often modest in appearance, are among the most evocative. They reveal everyday gestures, habits, tastes and concerns of the people who lived here nearly two thousand years ago.
The collections come from archaeological excavations carried out in the Province of Luxembourg, from the mid-19th century to the present day. This continuity in research strengthens both the credibility and the richness of the narrative, offering a coherent and evolving panorama of regional history.
The Arlon Archaeological Museum is not limited to a static exhibition. Educational workshops, courses and events are regularly organised, inviting both children and adults to deepen their understanding of archaeology in an engaging and participatory way. These activities make the museum a vibrant place, in constant dialogue with its visitors.
To prepare for the visit or extend the experience, a virtual tour already offers a glimpse of the collections. An invitation to curiosity, even before stepping through the door.
The discovery can continue beyond the museum walls. The visit naturally forms part of a broader itinerary including the Roman towers of Neptune and Jupiter as well as a walk through the nearby archaeological park. A combined ticket with the Gaspar Museum, located just opposite, also allows visitors to extend their cultural experience with ease.
The Arlon Archaeological Museum thus blends harmoniously into its urban surroundings, connecting the ancient past with the present-day city.
The visit leaves a sense of calm, curiosity and quiet wonder. Visitors depart with a deeper understanding of Gallo-Roman life, and with the feeling of having touched a profoundly human history, shaped by simple gestures and lasting traces.
