An ideal visit for those looking for a moment of serenity, who love soulful places and want to understand how, for centuries, caring for body and mind went hand in hand, during a cultural and contemplative getaway.
Some places naturally invite silence. At the Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital, this silence is never empty—it is filled with centuries of care, devotion and humanity. Beautifully preserved, this medieval convent-hospital, listed as a Major Heritage Site of Wallonia, is one of the last exceptional examples of a complete self-sufficient hospital complex. Here, medicine and spirituality intertwine within an architectural and landscape ensemble of rare harmony, in the heart of Lessines, along the banks of the Dendre River.
From the very first steps, it becomes clear that the hospital was designed to function independently. The main building, the farm, the medicinal plant garden, the cemetery, the ice house and the surroundings of the Dendre River form a harmonious ensemble where every space served a specific purpose.
The cloister, bathed in light, invites visitors to slow down. Sunlight plays across the columns, the trees cast shifting shadows on the paths, and the rustling leaves accompany the quiet walk. The calm is profound, almost enveloping. Many visitors describe it as a magical moment outside time, a place that inspires respect and humility.
The museum route immerses visitors in the history of medical and spiritual care provided to the most vulnerable. The medical and pharmaceutical collections are striking both for their richness and clarity. Visitors discover practices such as the theory of humours, bloodletting, and clysters, but also more surprising innovations like Helkiase, a medicine invented by Sister Marie-Rose Carouy.
The evolution of healthcare is presented with balance and humanity—from the medieval hospital to the hygienist hospital and later the pneumatic hospital. The narrative remains accessible and reminds visitors that these spaces were above all places of care, life and compassion.
The Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital also houses an exceptional museum of ancient art and convent life. Its rooms reveal a remarkable treasure: Gothic and Renaissance furniture, paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th centuries, pewter, copper and porcelain, textiles, and civil and religious silverware, along with rare archival documents.
Each piece tells a story, each object bears the trace of daily life, prayer and shared history. The chapel, filled with soft light, sometimes reflects a cascade of rainbow colours through its stained-glass windows, while the faint scent of incense seems to linger in the air.
The visit engages all the senses. The curious whispers of visitors, the joyful exclamations of children, the gentle rhythm of fountains, the song of moorhens along the water and the buzz of bees in the medicinal garden all contribute to a soft and living atmosphere.
The fragrance of aromatic plants, mixed with the scent of flowers, contrasts with the warm glow of candlelight as evening approaches. Some visitors even describe the sensation of spring sunlight filtering through the windows, warming both the skin and the spirit.
Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility via Grand’Rue, the Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital welcomes all audiences in a caring and respectful environment. Visitors often compare it to the Hospices de Beaune, praising both the quality of its preservation and the emotional impact of the site.
During the visit, one discovers the refectory, the nuns’ dormitory, the pharmacy, the kitchen, the patients’ ward, the infirmary, the library and the office of the Prioress—spaces that together tell a collective story shaped by care, faith and solidarity.
