St Rumbold's Tower Mechelen
Count to 538 and you'll have the Grote Markt and indeed the whole of Mechelen at your feet! The Sky Walk at the very top of the tower affords magnificent views. On the way up, you can stop and catch your breath in six rooms, each of which serves a different purpose. And you can admire from close to the tower clock and two carillons. Unique in Europe! Building work on this impressive Mechelen monument began back in 1452. However, tastes changed and the tower was never completed. But this did not prevent the 97-metre-high tower becoming the symbol of Mechelen. St Rumbold's Tower is also a UNESCO world heritage site. The city's most important documents used to be kept in this fortified tower, which also serves as a belfry. For centuries the belfry also played an important role as a look-out tower. Moreover, its bells served to tell the townspeople the time and sounded the alarm in the event of danger. As you climb the tower, the history of the city will come alive from the belly of the belfry. What better way to get to know Mechelen and the surrounding area than from the vantage point at the top!
